Susan Friesen, BScN, D.Ac, R.Ac

My career goal has always been to work in the health care field. I love helping people recover and get back to living a healthy life so it was an easy decision to study nursing at Dalhousie University. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1996 and initially worked as a nurse in the military at the National Defence Medical Center in Ottawa. However, my passion was to work in Intensive Care so when I left the military, I took my ICU Certificate at George Brown College in Toronto and worked in Pediatric Intensive Care at the Hospital for Sick Children.

I thought my career was all sorted out but life had a few bumps along the way. In 2005, not long after I had my son, we both contracted Fifth Disease. While my ten month old quickly recovered, my joint pain and swelling did not. Over the next year it worsened and I developed a positive rheumatoid factor. I was terrified. I was following in my mother’s footsteps with the criteria for a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, the debilitating, joint deforming disease with no cure. As a nurse, I knew the side effects of the long term chemotherapy and immune modulation drugs, including the possibility of cancer. I researched every treatment method I could to find remission from the RA, and by that point, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and multiple chemical sensitivity. As I slowly recovered with the principles of acupuncture, traditional chinese medicine, and naturopathic medicine, my mother was given the diagnosis of lymphoma (cancer) and passed away after a long hard battle…how I wish I had known how to help her so that she didn’t need to struggle as she did….but it is one of the very reasons I chose to study TCM and Acupuncture. Since then I have practiced under the generous study of a fifth generation acupuncturist and loved learning the way Chinese Medicine focuses so carefully on the very subtle changes in the body that lead to health or illness and how to best balance those minor changes to slowly reverse disease and prevent future illness.

Now, my goal is to apply the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture that helped in my own recovery so that I can help others reach the same state of health I now enjoy. I live pain free, I don’t take any medication, and thankfully I don’t suffer the effects of fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue, or multiple chemical sensitivity anymore!

As I work with clients in clinic, I now celebrate their recovery as much as they do, knowing that a better state of health is a gift that each of us can strive for and be thankful for each and every day.
